A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

Dear Ottawa-Vanier neighbours,

As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, I hope you have been able to soak up the sun and safely enjoy the outdoors in our area.

With Covid-19 cases increasing at an alarming rate and the current Stay-at-home order, it is important that we continue to follow Ottawa Public Health Guidelines to protect and care for each other. It has been a very difficult year, with many lost lives and tragedies, and I want to offer my deepest condolences to the residents of Ottawa-Vanier who have lost loved ones.
I would like to thank our frontline and essential workers, local business owners, and teachers for their tremendous work and ongoing commitment to keep our community safe and strong.

On our end, vaccine procurement and deliveries are rapidly accelerating, and with a total of 9.5 million doses received by the end of March, we remain on track to receive 44 million doses by the end of June.

Visit at Vanier community center

As for our local businesses and organizations, I am thrilled to see that our local entrepreneurs and community leaders are benefitting from various government programs, such as the Canada Summer Jobs. This year, 172 employers in Ottawa-Vanier will receive support from this initiative, which will provide them with 833 jobs that will account for $3,098,302 in funding.

There are many other financial supports available for families, workers, and businesses that will help our community as we navigate the new lockdown measures. I am including a list below of available programs and their links to apply.

As always, you can also contact my office to obtain help navigating government programs and services. Give us a call at 613-998-1860 or email us at [email protected].

Kind regards,

Mona Fortier

MESSAGE FROM THE HON. MONA FORTIER ASKING THE RESIDENTS OF OTTAWA-VANIER TO STAY HOME

AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR VETERANS IN OTTAWA-VANIER
Last week, along with Minister Lisa MacLeod, Mayor Watson, and Suzanne Le of the Multifaith Housing Initiative, I was thrilled to announce $1.5 million towards Veterans’ House to help create 40 homes for veterans who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing homelessness in Ottawa-Vanier.

These unprecedented times remind us more than ever that nothing is more important than having a place to call home, which is why our government will continue our steady progress in ensuring housing for all. The $1.5 million in funding towards Veterans’ House was part of a bilateral agreement between the Federal Government and the Province of Ontario within the framework of the National Housing Strategy, our 10-year, $70-billion+ plan to strengthen the middle-class, fuel our economy and give more Canadians a place to call home.

I want to recognize the importance Veterans’ House makes in the lives of those who have served. It provides supports to help address mental health and addictions issues, an exercise room to help stay active, a dog park for service dogs, and many more. During the announcement I was pleased to hear from Bill Beaton, a Royal Canadian Air Force veteran who served our country bravely and, for the first time in many years, he will have a safe and affordable place to call home.

Your Ottawa-Vanier elected representatives would like to honour members of the community for their volunteerism. Do you know someone that you feel deserves to be recognized for their dedication to the Ottawa-Vanier Community? Does this person exemplify the spirit of what it is to be a volunteer? Do you feel like this person has:

If someone comes to mind, no matter how big or small their contribution to their community; we’d like you to tell us about them. Once your nominations have been received, we will identify the recipients, and then your Councillor, our Member of Parliament and Member of Provincial Parliament will honour them with a personalized certificate. We want each recipient to be properly acknowledged for their achievements, have the chance to accept their certificate, speak to their nomination, and what/where they volunteer.

With Covid restrictions in place, we will be hosting a Zoom evening event in late May 2021 to honour the recipients. Links will be shared with the selected nominees shortly before the event. Please submit your nominations to your ward councillor by 4:00pm on Monday, May 3rd, 2021. There is no word limit to the nomination.
Depending on how many responses we receive, we may not be able to provide a certificate to each person. By no means does that it in any way lessen the importance and value of the nominee’s contributions.
Thank you, and we look forward to reading your submissions.
Sincerely,
