Word from the MP

Dear neighbours,

I hope you are doing well in this early spring.

COVID-19 is still with us and we must continue to follow public health guidelines and do our part to keep each other healthy.

While the impact of all variants continues to be monitored in Canada, we know that vaccination and other public health measures are our best defence against COVID-19.

We continue to adjust public health guidelines and make science-based decisions to protect our communities. We have safe and effective vaccines and are among the top countries with the highest vaccination rates in the world.

My team and I are available to answer any of your questions and concerns. Don’t hesitate to contact my office by email at [email protected] or calling 613-998-1860.

Enjoy the good weather in good health!

Canada Summer Jobs

Good news! The 2022 edition of Summer Jobs is confirmed and more than 700 job offers from over 150 Ottawa-Vanier employers will be available for youth aged between 15 and 30.

This is a great opportunity for youth to gain work experience and job skills with local employers. If you know a young person who is looking for a summer job and might be interested in this initiative, please share it with your networks.

Volunteer Week: a great week to discover possible activities in our region

Last week was the national volunteer week. We have many volunteers who are engaged in different organizations.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team of volunteers and supporters of the Rideau Winter Trail which is a non-profit organization founded in November 2020 to promote the sustainability, development and public use of the trails in the areas near the Rideau River in central Ottawa.

This community-based initiative offers a winter trail that stretches from Donald Street to Hurdman along 9 km offering winter fun and activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, walking and fat biking.

This organization is supported by many other organizations such as the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the City of Ottawa, Osgoode Property, Alta Vista Community Association, and Councillors Fleury and King.

The long-term vision for the trail is to expand to nearby areas until it reaches Mooney's Bay. This extension project will depend on funding and financial support from the community.

Service Canada delays issuing passports to citizens

With the easing of health restrictions and the resumption of travel for some Canadians, Service Canada is experiencing a sharp increase in demand for passports.

Wait times for some services have become longer than normal, making the process more difficult for some people.

Service Canada centers across Canada are working hard to ensure that anyone planning to travel receives a passport before their travel date and strongly advise everyone to apply 3 to 4 months before their trip to ensure they receive their passport on time.

The current priority for Service Canada Centres is for Canadians who plan to travel within 25 working days to go to one of the 300 Service Canada-Passport Office nearest them and bring proof of travel with them.
Minister Gould visited Service Canada centers across the country and spoke with front-line staff about the challenges they face.

Service Canada has hired more people to increase productivity and serve Canadians more quickly and efficiently.
Below is the information you need to submit passport-related inquiries.

Hours of operation: Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm

Eid al-Fitr Celebration at EY Center

On Monday, May 2, 2022, we gathered as a community to celebrate Eid al-Fitr at EY Center in the presence of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Honourable Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transportation.

Many of my other colleagues were present such as MP Anita Vandenbeld, MP Jenna Sudds, MP Marie-France Lalonde, MP Yasir Naqvi, MP Greg Fergus, MP Chandra Arya, and MPP Lucille Collard.

This celebration marks the end of Ramadan, a month of prayer and fasting where Muslims from around the world fast from sunrise to sunset in a spiritual celebration and sharing between our communities.

Many people from the Muslim community attended Eid prayers in their mosques on the morning of Monday, May 2, 2022. It is traditional to wear new clothes on this day and to prepare pastries and gifts in advance to exchange with family and friends. It is also a tradition to donate an amount per household to a charity organization called Zakkat-Al-Fitr to help the poor.

Without forgetting the warm welcome on Tuesday, April 19 by the Muslim community around an iftar (a dinner) in a friendly atmosphere at the Abo Ther Alghafari mosque. The latter is a charity organization founded in 1993 and the one and only mosque that provides religious and other services to Shiite Muslims.

Although the last few months have been difficult for all of us, our resilience and respect for sanitary measures the resumption of many daily activities became possible such as gatherings at the mosque.

On behalf of my family, my team and myself, I wish you a happy Eid Al Fitr with lots of joy and good health!

Classical Theatre Festival Restarts

The Classical Theatre Festival is back in our region after a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

Residents of the nation's capital will finally be able to enjoy summer theatre in the city after many years of waiting for the festival to be held in Perth.
The festival is a great opportunity to showcase the world of Canadian theatre by showcasing some of Canada's top theatre talent.

Among the performances is the play The Fourposter written by Jan de Hartog about a couple married for over 35 years who tell us about their daily lives and adventures from the nervous wedding night, the birth of children and their upbringing, the mid-life crisis, empty nesting and the realities of aging.

Performances are scheduled at Ottawa Arts Court from August 5 to 28, 2022, Wednesday to Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and Wednesday to Thursday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

For those who wish to support the Festival financially, there are opportunities to make donations directly or through used books, the sale of which supports the Save-a-Seat program that permits low-income families to access free tickets.

In the meantime, if you would like to get involved with the theatre as a volunteer, just call (613) 695-9330 or [email protected].

Tickets can be purchased at (613) 695-9330 or through www.classictheatre.ca.

Free tickets to low-income people through local social services.

For everyone's safety, masks are mandatory inside the theatre.
