A word from your MP

This week is Small Business Week, an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the local businesses that contribute to the colour and character of our communities. Small businesses create jobs, grow our economy, and make our communities special.

Small businesses have faced many challenges in recent years: adjusting to provincial pandemic closures, keeping employees safe with adequate supplies of PPE, and dealing with the affordability challenges created by global inflation. In recent years, our government has directly supported businesses and their workers with programs like the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA), and Canada Workers Benefit.

Now, we are continuing the work of supporting businesses by lowering taxes for growing businesses, helping small businesses scale up their e-commerce capabilities, investing in stronger supply chains, and increasing the flow of incoming workers to help address labour shortages. But we can all make a difference by supporting our local business community.

I encourage you to grab your coffee from a local coffee shop, get dinner at an affordable family restaurant, or begin your holiday shopping early with unique, locally made gifts for your loved ones. Let’s celebrate our small businesses and the incredible people behind them!

Unveiling of the AMICITIA France-Canada Monument

Canada and France have strong and enduring ties due to our shared history, values, and traditions. This week, we unveiled the AMICITIA France-Canada Momument in commemoration of Canada’s profound relationship with France which spans more than four centuries of shared history and over 90 years of official diplomatic relations.

The monument will serve as a reminder of the history between Canada and France and inspire future generations to preserve the unique relationship between our two countries.

Beechwood Cemetery received a federal contribution of $25,000 through Veterans Affairs Canada’s Commemorative Partnership Program to support the construction and maintenance of this monument.

I also had the opportunity to meet the new Ambassador of France to Canada, Michel Miraillet. I look forward to our continued collaboration in support of strong relations between our two countries.

Next Monday is Election Day!

On Monday, Ottawa residents will head to the polls to choose their next Councillor and Ottawa’s new mayor.

With our current mayor and many councillors not seeking re-election, Ottawa faces a change election. The city is at a pivotal point in addressing issues we all care about, like affordability, mental health, housing, homelessness, and public transit—to name a few. This election will have a lasting influence on our city, so now is the time to get involved and shape its future.

Voting will take place on Monday, October 24th from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM at all municipal voting locations. You can find out your nearest voting location on the voter card you receive by mail or by using the Elections Ottawa “Where do I vote?” Tool.

The new round of sanctions will apply to 17 individuals and 3 entities of the Iranian regime that have participated in or enabled gross human rights violations against Iranian citizens. These measures will effectively freeze any assets these individuals and entities hold in Canada and prevent them from benefitting from any economic activity in Canada.

Climate Action Incentive Goes out to Canadians this Fall

Families in Ontario have begun receiving the fall payment of the Climate Action Incentive rebate, which is just another way we’re making life more affordable while taking meaningful action to fight climate change.

In provinces covered by the federal price on pollution, we created the Climate Action Incentive with affordability and fairness in mind. Currently, eight out of ten households receiving more money back than they pay in, with low- and middle-income households benefiting the most.

A typical family of four in Ontario will receive $186.25 this fall from the Climate Action Incentive. Learn if you qualify and how much you can expect to receive in future payments.
