A word from your MP

As the House of Commons began a new session this week, we focused our debates on the second reading of the Fall Economic Statement and the Canada-Ukraine Economic Agreement.

Earlier this week, we announced that we will provide low-cost loans to colleges and universities to enable them to build more student residences. Through this program, post-secondary institutions can participate in the construction of off-campus housing. More housing for students frees up accommodation for those in need throughout the year - it's a significant win for our communities.

As for myself, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has entrusted me with new responsibilities as Deputy Government Whip, and I thank him for the confidence he has placed in me with this new mandate.

February is Black History Month. Every February, people from across Canada participate in activities and festivities for Black History Month, honoring the heritage of Black individuals in Canada and their communities. In 2024, the theme for Black History Month is "Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; A Future to Build."

Winter provides many opportunities for outdoor activities, especially here in Ottawa-Vanier, where there's something for almost everyone! Despite unpredictable temperatures, there are four outdoor refrigerated skating rinks accessible to all, depending on weather conditions. There are many other outdoor rinks in the city; you can find information about locations and conditions here!

There is also the Rideau Winter Trail, offering winter sports for all ages, whether you want to snowshoe, cross-country ski, or simply take a leisurely stroll – the Rideau Winter Trail has you covered. Thanks to the team of volunteers and ambassadors who take care of the trails. A trail map can be found here.

There's also the Heritage East Ski Trail, offering up to 40 km of trails to explore! Maintained by volunteers, they are entirely funded by user donations and supporters. Maps, conditions, and more information can be found here!

Black History Month

February marks Black History Month, we pay homage to the remarkable contributions of Black leaders, innovators, and trailblazers who have indelibly shaped history. The 2024 theme “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build” celebrates the rich past and present contributions and accomplishments of Black people in Canada, while aspiring to embrace new opportunities for the future.

The theme aligns with the 10th year of the International Decade for People of African Descent and recognizes that people of African descent represent a distinct group whose human rights must be promoted and protected.

No matter where you live, we invite all Canadians to learn more about Black Canadian communities and how they continue to help shape Canada. To highlight the contributions of Black entrepreneurs within Ottawa-Vanier, I highlighted Luc Thermonvil during my member's statement which you may watch here. Luc is an entrepreneur, philanthropist and business leader in Ottawa-Vanier. He works passionately with other Black business owners to to ensure their success. Thank you, Luc!
