On Wednesday, I took part in the official launch of the fundraising campaign by Ottawa Riverkeeper, which is now located at the NCC River House on the Sir-George-Étienne-Cartier parkway. Supporting an organization like the Ottawa Riverkeeper is essential. Their commitment inspires cooperative action to protect and preserve our waterways, ensuring a healthy watershed for all generations and species. By protecting our rivers, we preserve not only its biodiversity, but also the quality of life in our communities. 

Thursday June 20 was World Refugee Day, an important moment to remind us of the importance of welcoming and supporting displaced people. By observing this day, we honor the resilience and courage of millions of refugees around the world. Together, we must continue to promote inclusion, diversity and compassion for those seeking a new life in peace and security. 

Friday June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to celebrate the heritage, history and culture of Canada's aboriginal peoples. To mark the occasion, I participated in the Wabano Centre's annual Gala in support of the many programs that provide essential health care and services to the community.

And, as of Friday, Ottawa-Vanier families can expect hundreds of dollars in their bank accounts as the Canada Child Allowance is deposited today. Over the past 8 years, the Canada Child Allowance has helped lift hundreds of thousands of young people out of poverty. We will continue our commitment to making life fairer for you and for all generations.

On Saturday, June 22, at Mādahòkìlem Farm, the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival will take place. It's a weekend filled with events like a Pow-Wow, educational days, workshops and activities, a market and much more! Come and discover aboriginal culture at this family-friendly event in the region.
 
As Canada Day approaches, you can pick up a Canadian flag lawn sign.  You can pick one up at my constituency office from June 24 to June 28, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Invitation to Join the New Horizon for Seniors Workshop: Empowering Generations Together

Dear Seniors,

We are delighted to extend a warm invitation to you for the New Horizon for Seniors Workshop, scheduled to be held on June 29th, 2024. This workshop is an exciting initiative designed to bridge the gap between generations, harnessing the wealth of experience of our seniors to guide and inspire young entrepreneurs.

The primary focus of this workshop is to recruit seniors for volunteer leadership and advisory roles. We believe that the insights and experiences of our senior community are invaluable in shaping the future of our projects and ensuring they effectively meet the needs of all participants.

Key Activities of the Workshop:

• Recruitment of Seniors: We aim to identify seniors who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and contributing to the community.
• Consultation Sessions: Engaging with identified seniors to discuss topics of interest that will be mutually beneficial to both seniors and young entrepreneurs.
• Organizational Meeting: To discuss the specifics of the seniors’ roles and responsibilities.

Your participation in this workshop will involve active decision-making processes, offering suggestions for new activities, and providing critical insights into how we can better cater to the needs of seniors. Your expertise and guidance will play a pivotal role in the success of this initiative.

We are excited about the potential for collaboration and the positive impact this workshop can have on both our senior participants and budding entrepreneurs. Your involvement would greatly enhance the richness and depth of our discussions and plans.

Introducing Mirela Homesharing

Did you know that we have a bilingual community-oriented homesharing model in the Ottawa region?

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Mireille of Habitations partagées / Mirela Homesharing which is a community non-profit organization that brings together two or more people who want to share a home in a spirit of mutual support.

Mirela offers different types of homesharing arrangements. Some are intergenerational, while other arrangements involve a peer relationship. Each one is unique and focuses on safety and individual needs. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved!

Nominations for His Majesty King Charles III's Coronation Medal

Nominations are now open for the Coronation Medal of His Majesty King Charles III! As Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier, I am delighted to participate as a nominating partner with 20 medals awarded to deserving recipients from our community.

Eligible candidates must meet the following national criteria:

• Have made a significant contribution to the country, a province, a territory, a region or a community, or have accomplished something abroad that brings credit to Canada, and
• Be alive on 6 May 2023, the date of Her Majesty's Coronation. The medal may be awarded posthumously, provided the nominee was alive on that date

Members of the community are invited to nominate outstanding candidates who have made a difference in the community for the King Charles III Coronation Medals. Nominations will be accepted until July 31, 2024.

About this consultation

The purpose of this consultation is to gather information to increase understanding of the experiences of older adults who are Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex, or who use other terms related to gender and sexual diversity (2SLGBTQI+) and living at home. The information gathered could support policy development as part of the commitment of the Government of Canada's first Federal 2SLGBTQI+Action Plan. The action plan aims to advance rights and equality for 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada.

Who is the focus of this consultation

This consultation aims to learn from people who are:

• Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or intersex, or who use other terms related to gender and sexual diversity (2SLGBTQI+)
• aged 55 and over
• currently residing in Canada and
• living at home (for example, excludes long-term care or acute care facilities)

NextUp Prezdential Basketball

NextUp is Prezdential Basketball’s brand new program to help teens reach their full potential. Sessions include 1 hour of basketball training and 1 hour of life skills with a focus on essential skills rarely taught in classrooms such as organization, financing, mental health, and cooking. The program is co-run by Bhanu Loganathan, a university-level basketball player and Nick Cholmsky, a professional mental health at McGill University. Our program provides teens with the tools necessary to transition to the next stage of their lives, whether that be high school, post-secondary education, or the workforce.

Who: Teens in age groups: 13-15 and 16-18
When: Fridays 9 - 11am (4 sessions beginning July 5th)
Where: Ottawa Technical Secondary School
Cost: Free!
