A word from your MP

It's summer in Ottawa-Vanier, and many community events and festivals are taking place in our various neighbourhoods.

Last weekend I attended the 49th Plenary Session of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF) in Montreal. The Canadian delegation was well represented by my fellow parliamentarians, senators and MPs. We held fruitful discussions on the topic of the day, artificial intelligence.  It was also an opportunity for me to take part in the Network of Women Parliamentarians last Saturday alongside my regional colleagues Marie-France Lalonde, MP for Orléans and Lucille Collard, MPP for Ottawa-Vanier.  We congratulated the Alliance des femmes de la francophonie canadienne, who received top honours by receiving the Women Parliamentarians Network Award for their commitment to promoting gender equality.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is making a real difference in the lives of Canadians. More than 250,000 seniors have received care through this new plan. By 2025, 9 million Canadians will be eligible for CDCP services. As of July 8, eligible patients can visit any dental provider for services under the CDCP, provided the provider agrees to bill SunLife directly. This will reduce paperwork for dentists and further ease the financial burden on patients!

As Canadian athletes get ready to compete in Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, Budget2024 includes investments into supporting our athletes from the playground to the podium. These investments were recently highlighted across the country.  Budget 2024 invests over $55 million in the next two years, including $16 million over two years for the Sport Support Program to ensure safe, inclusive, and welcoming environments for athletes. $35M over 5 years to the Athlete Assistance Program as well as $15M in investments into the Community Sport for All initiative to ensure community-level sport becomes more available, more affordable, and more accessible to more Canadians.

The Honourable Ya'ara Saks, and the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, on behalf of the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced more than $47 million in federal funding for innovative projects to help support Canada's health workforce, including:

These investments will inform retention and recruitment practices, support the mobility of physicians across Canada to help communities facing shortages, and investigate solutions to strengthen the health workforce and positively impact policy and practice.

The next instalment of the Canada Carbon Rebate is set for next week. For those who qualify, you should receive it directly into your bank accounts or by cheque starting July 15. A family of 4 in Ottawa-Vanier will receive up to $1,120 for the year 2024.  This rebate is an amount paid to individuals and families to offset the cost of federal pollution pricing.

Have a good weekend!

Youth Mental Health Fund Consultations

The Honourable Ya’ara Saks, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, launched a public online consultation to help inform the development of the Youth Mental Health Fund.

The online consultation will run June 24 to July 31, 2024 and invites people to share their perspectives and expertise on the development of the YMHF. The consultation is open to all Canadians, incuding young people and their families, academics and other orders of government, Indigenous organizations, and community organizations that deliver mental health services to youth
