A word from your MP

With the school year already underway, it will be my turn to return to the House of Commons with the parliamentary session starting next Monday, September 15. I look forward to continuing our work for the community and representing your interests. Thank you for your engagement, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or topics you’d like to share.

I’ll continue this newsletter by sharing that I’ve been quite busy in the riding and on delegations to Windsor, Halifax, and Montreal. The past two weeks have been full, with numerous meetings and visits across the riding.

A piece of good news was announced on July 25 by the federal government. Alongside Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, City Councillor Rawlson King, and Bayview Group President Alnoor Gulamani, we announced that the federal government is investing more than $45 million to build 121 new rental units by Bayview Group in the Wateridge Village.

Did you know that Atelier Rosso Desserterie in Blackburn Hamlet is a thriving small business? I treated myself to some gelato to celebrate their first anniversary on August 24. This family-run business is deeply rooted in Ottawa–Vanier–Gloucester, and owner Sonia and her team put their hearts into creating fresh, delicious treats every day.

I invite you to check out Atelier Rosso at 110 Bearbrook Road, Unit 2B!

On Tuesday, I had an inspiring visit to Artengine🎨💻 This lab located at the Ottawa Art Court and Art Gallery is led by Ryan and Remco. This summer, Madeleine, a dynamic young participant in the Canada Summer Jobs program, also had the opportunity to develop hands-on skills in media arts, technology, and creative innovation.

On August 28, I went for a workout at Ludens Fitness in the Village des Riverains, one of the first businesses to open in the neighbourhood and help bring vitality to this growing area! A big thank you to Aman and Anki, the founders, for the warm welcome and the excellent training session!

On Friday, August 29, Liberal MPs from the National Capital Region gathered in caucus in Cantley to discuss the economic and policy priorities we will advance in the upcoming parliamentary session.

During the session, leaders from economic and tourism organizations—including the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, Invest Ottawa, Tourism Ottawa, Ottawa International Airport, Gatineau Chamber of Commerce, Tourisme Outaouais, and ID Gatineau—as well as Mayors Mark Sutcliffe (Ottawa) and Maude Marquis-Bissonnette (Gatineau) and Prefect Marc Carrière (Outaouais Regional Municipality), joined to share their priorities and key issues to consider as we set our agenda.

From August 31 to September 5, I actively participated in the 50th Annual Meeting of the Canada–France Interparliamentary Association in Halifax and Montreal. This was a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships with French parliamentarians, deputies, and senators, while taking part in a full program of meetings with key political and regional leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the economy, geopolitical environment, and efforts in innovation and economic development in Nova Scotia and Montreal.

This past weekend was a busy one with activities across the riding.

On Saturday afternoon, it was a pleasure to see the community come together for BeechFest 2025, celebrating local culture, music, food, and art on Beechwood Avenue.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on Beechwood Avenue. Between the live music, delicious food, art, local vendors, and family-friendly atmosphere, this year’s edition was truly unforgettable.
Special thanks to Rawlson King, Stephanie Plante, Lucille Collard, and Mayor Mark Sutcliffe for their presence and support of our vibrant Vanier community. 💛

Big shout-out to the Vanier BIA, the amazing organizers behind this event! 🙌

See you next year, BeechFest!

Later that evening, I attended a moving and solemn ceremony at Beechwood National Military Cemetery, where we joined veterans and families to honour those who have served Canada and to remember those lost to suicide. A moving and solemn ceremony this evening at Beechwood’s National Military Cemetery, where we gathered alongside veterans and the families of soldiers to honour and remember those who served Canada with courage and dedication, and who tragically lost their lives to suicide. These men and women stood ready to defend our country, and their loss is felt deeply in the military community and beyond. Together, we lit candles in their memory, a symbol of gratitude and a reminder that their service, courage, and devotion will never be forgotten.

Lest we forget. 🌺

If you are struggling or having thoughts of suicide, know that you are not alone. Please call or text 988 for immediate support. (This resource is available 24/7 for anyone in crisis.)

Over the past two weeks, in addition to my parliamentary and international activities, our government has made several important announcements to strengthen the Canadian economy and support workers and businesses across the country.

Among these:

Building Canada Strong: New Measures to Protect Strategic Industries

Canada is taking bold steps to strengthen our economy at home. In response to global trade changes, the Prime Minister announced new measures to protect, build, and transform Canada’s strategic industries. These initiatives will help workers gain new skills, support businesses in diversifying products and markets, and increase domestic demand for Canadian goods—building Canada Strong.

Key measures include:

  • Reskilling up to 50,000 workers and launching a digital jobs and training platform.

  • $5 billion Strategic Response Fund to help companies adapt, diversify, and grow.

  • Buy Canadian Policy to prioritize Canadian suppliers and local content.

  • Immediate liquidity support for SMEs and the auto sector, including loan expansions and regulatory flexibility.

  • Support for agriculture and biofuels, including a $370 million production incentive and expanded funding for market diversification.

  • Regional Tariff Response Initiative, providing $1 billion over three years to help businesses impacted by tariffs.

These comprehensive measures aim to make Canada’s economy more resilient, create thriving careers, and strengthen Canadian industries for the future.

Building big projects that will transform and connect Canada’s economy

Last Friday, our government launched the new Major Projects Office. This Office will serve as a single point of contact for governments, proponents, and Indigenous communities to submit their proposals for nation-building projects – ports, railways, energy grids – that will better connect our economy and create high-paying careers, while protecting Canada’s rigorous environmental standards and upholding the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

We are moving at a speed not seen in generations to build major projects that will unlock Canada’s full economic potential and build Canada strong.

Regional Tariff Response Initiative

Our government announced the launch of applications for the Regional Relief Tariff Initiative (RRTI), which will provide $160 million in targeted support through FedDev Ontario to small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as non-profit organizations in the region.

In communities like Ottawa–Vanier–Gloucester, where there are so many SMEs, this relief is so important to help get through these unjust tariffs.

Together, let’s unite our efforts to build and sustain a strong Canada

Programs and news:

Over the past year, we have seen a troubling rise in antisemitism in Canada. This is unacceptable. I have added my name to the letter published by my colleague Anthony Housefather to reaffirm that it is essential to stand united against hatred in all its forms. Our communities are stronger when we work together to promote respect, inclusion, and safety for everyone.

You can read my colleague’s statement, that I also signed below:

Statement on the Deplorable Rise of Antisemitism in Canada

"Jewish Canadians – like all Canadians – have a fundamental right to feel safe in Canada. Regrettably, right now, there is a deep sense of unease, fear and unsafety among many Jewish Canadians across Canada.

On Thursday, a Jewish woman was stabbed in Ottawa while shopping at a grocery store in an incident police are treating as a hate-motivated crime. The man who attacked her has previously posted virulent antisemitic comments on social media. Three years ago, such an incident would have been shocking. Today, much less so. From attacks on synagogues, Jewish schools and monuments, Jewish owned businesses, Jewish community organizations and lately individual Jews themselves, antisemitism is becoming normalized.

Since Hamas’s brutal terrorist attack on Israel on October 7th and Israel’s military response, anti-Jewish hatred has skyrocketed the world over. Canada is no exception. In Canada, like other countries, actions to target local Jewish communities and make them responsible for actions happening in the Middle East, are wrong, unacceptable, and antisemitic.

Right now, Jews make up slightly more than 1% of Canada’s population, but are the victims of 70% of reported religious-based acts of hate. This spreading hate is a call to action for all Canadians, all levels of government, law enforcement, schools, public institutions and places of work.

As Parliamentarians, we have already done work to determine what concrete actions are needed by all levels of government, schools and police. We support the actions recommended in the December 2024 Report of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, and the outcomes of the March 2025 National Forum on Combatting Antisemitism. As Members of Parliament, we stand firmly behind the Prime Minister’s commitment to quickly bring forward changes to the Criminal Code this fall to prevent unlawful fear and intimidation outside places of worship, schools and community centres.

We are committed to keeping all Canadians safe. This includes the Jewish community that has contributed so much to building the vibrant country we have today. Jews should be able to live their lives safely with their Jewish identity proudly known, on the streets, at work, at community gatherings and in schools and on campuses. Every one of us in Canada owes this to our neighbours and to one another."
