A word from your MP

Dear Residents,

June is well underway, and we have a few weeks of work left in the House of Commons before we adjourn for the summer. This week, we passed Bill C-64, An Act respecting pharmacare, which is now before the Senate. We are working to ensure free access to contraceptives and diabetes medications for Canadians who need them, as costs should not be a barrier to a healthy life. We also continued debating the 2024 Budget.

On June 6, the 80th anniversary of D-Day took place, and Prime Minister Trudeau travelled to Deauville, France, with a Canadian delegation to commemorate the anniversary. We have a responsibility to remember the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers and our allies to defend our values.

This week also includes two important environmental days. Wednesday, June 5, was World Environment Day, and Saturday, June 8, will be World Oceans Day. It is important to reiterate our commitment to combating climate change. We are helping communities prepare for the impacts of climate change with one of the largest investments of $530 million dedicated specifically to climate adaptation; building more net-zero housing; and reducing our emissions so our children can breathe clean air.

With the summer season approaching and the importance of tourism as an economic development sector for Ottawa-Vanier and the National Capital Region, I met with the team from Ottawa Tourism, led by Michael Crockatt. We discussed the opportunities and challenges facing Ottawa’s tourism sector. Tourism generates and contributes millions of dollars to Ottawa’s economic prosperity, and we discussed ways the federal government can support Ottawa’s tourism sector to help it reach its full potential.

As we approach Canada Day on July 1, you can pick up a Canadian flag poster for your yard to show your Canadian pride.

To order a poster: Contact our office at 613-998-1860 or by email at [email protected].

Enabling Accessibility Fund: Youth Innovation Component - Call for Proposals

Minister Khera launched a new call for proposals (CFP) under the Enabling Accessibility Fund’s (EAF) Youth Innovation component.

Through this initiative, our Government is investing in projects identified by youth from across the country and providing opportunities for youth to develop leadership skills, gain valuable experiences, and make a positive difference by improving accessibility within their communities.

Through this CFP, Canadian youth between the ages of 15 to 30, are encouraged to become youth accessibility leaders (YALs).

The role of a YAL allows for youth to identify accessibility barriers within their communities, and then partner with a local organization on an accessibility project to secure up to $12,000 in funding to help address barriers in community spaces and workplaces and create a more inclusive environment for all.

The EAF program supports our Government’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), which is focused on reducing poverty among persons with disabilities, helping persons with disabilities find good quality jobs, facilitating easier access to federal programs and services, and building accessible and inclusive communities while fostering a sense of inclusion.

Eligible organizations must submit their funding application(s) by November 1, 2024 at 3 p.m. EDT.
