Dear residents

Happy Canada Day weekend! As we approach the 157th anniversary of Canada, let's take a moment to reflect on what it means to be Canadian. It's a time to come together and celebrate the rich mosaic of our nation. It's a day to reflect on the values that make Canada special: peace, democracy and inclusion. By waving our flags and enjoying the festivities, we pay tribute to the diverse cultures and communities that contribute to our shared identity.

Thursday June 27 was Canadian Multiculturalism Day, a time when we pay tribute to the many cultural communities that help build a strong and vibrant Canadian society. It is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity that enriches us collectively and reaffirm our commitment to fairness, inclusion and mutual respect.

Good news regarding the Canadian Dental Care Plan. As of June 27, eligible children under the age of 18, as well as Canadians who hold a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate, can now apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan. To date, more than 200,000 Canadians have received dental care thanks to this program, which is making a real difference to the lives of Canadians.

The revitalization of the Byward Market is a priority for federal, provincial, city and for community partners. On Wednesday June 26, we marked the opening of Ottawa Police’s new Neighbourhood Operations Centre on Rideau Street! This center will enhance community safety, foster stronger relationships between the police and Ottawa-Vanier residents, and contribute to a vibrant, welcoming downtown. Together, we’re building a safer and more connected community.

And finally, as it is now summer, many people will be taking time off to travel with their families, so make sure you're ready to travel! Make sure your passport and other necessary travel documents are up to date and valid. Service Canada can renew passports in just 10 days if necessary, and 20 by post.

Introducing Mirela Homesharing

Did you know that we have a bilingual community-oriented homesharing model in the Ottawa region?

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Mireille of Habitations partagées / Mirela Homesharing which is a community non-profit organization that brings together two or more people who want to share a home in a spirit of mutual support.

Mirela offers different types of homesharing arrangements. Some are intergenerational, while other arrangements involve a peer relationship. Each one is unique and focuses on safety and individual needs. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved!

If you'd like to find out more about how Habitations partagées Mirela Homesharing can help you better age in place and in your community, please contact Mireille Leroux, Co-founder and Community Support and Development, 613-406-2939, [email protected]
