A word from your MP

Dear constituents,

Every October, during Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women in Canada’s history who worked tirelessly to promote equality and advance the rights of all women. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Women’s History Month in Canada. Since 1992, we have been celebrating the women who challenged the status quo to improve the lives of all women in Canada.

Persons Day, on October 18, marks the day in 1929 when the highest court of appeal in Canada declared the legal definition of the word “person” as including both women and men. This marked the beginning of more and more women getting involved in public and political life in Canada to promote and protect women’s rights—work that continues today.

Whether it is making sure women receive equal pay for equal work, addressing gender-based violence, or working to create more accessible and affordable childcare spaces, we are thankful for all the progress achieved thanks to Canada’s women’s movement.

All throughout October, I encourage you to learn about these women and their stories. You can view a timeline of women’s history in Canada and view the important contributions of Canadian women and girls at Government of Canada: Women's History Month 2022.

Removing Barriers for Women in the Workforce

I recently attended the Ascension’Elle Conference organized by the Regroupement des gens d’affaires de la capitale nationale (RGA) to lend my voice to more discussions on how we can break down systemic barriers preventing or limiting women at work and promote greater equality in the workplace. Thank you, RGA and all involved in planning this event.

Canada’s Response to Human Rights Abuses in Iran

While the Iranian regime continues to demonstrate a disregard for human rights and human life, we stand with the people of Iran and everyone who is protesting in support of human rights. Canada is using the most robust and comprehensive set of sanctions in the world to date to crack down on this brutal regime and the individuals responsible for these heinous acts.
