A Word from Your MP

Dear residents,

On Thursday, our government delivered the 2022 Fall Economic Statement, providing Canadians with an update on the state of Canada’s economy within a challenging global environment and outlining our plan to make life more affordable, support the middle class, and build an economy that works for everyone.

The 2022 Fall Economic Statement includes commitments to:

The federal government is also launching its biennial review of Canada’s international development assistance payments and whether these payments continue to meet the expectations and priorities of Canadians to fight poverty, assist developing countries, and uphold international human rights standards. Canadians are invited to send their comments by email to the Department of Finance by December 14, 2022.

Improving Service Delivery Times for Canadians

Last week, I paid a visit to the Toronto Service Canada Centre which has been providing front-line services for residents of their community for over 20 years.

With the work we've accomplished on the new task force to improve government services for Canadians, it's great to see more Service Canada locations make tangible, measurable progress in reducing wait times and getting passports and essential documents to people much more quickly.

Update on Government Programs and Services

Families to receive double the GST rebate for six months

We’ve introduced targeted support that will help roughly half of Canadian families with children, and more than half of Canadian seniors, making a real difference for Canadians. Starting today, families will receive up to double the GST Tax Credit for six months.

That means:

It's just one of the steps we've taken to make life more affordable. We introduced legislation in Parliament to provide up to $1,300 over two years for children under 12 starting this year and deliver $500 to nearly 2 million low-income renters struggling with the cost of housing.

Helping More Canadians with their Student Loans

With the rising cost of living, many post-secondary graduates are struggling to cover the cost of daily essentials while paying down student loan debt and interest.

We have improved the Repayment Assistance Plan to help more people manage their student loan debt. As of this week, Canadians living alone do not need to make payments on their federal student loan until they earn an income of $40,000 or more. Canadians living in larger households can also benefit if their income is below the threshold (based on family size). Click here to learn more.

Supporting Canada’s Veterans with the Poppy Campaign

Wearing the poppy honours Canada’s veterans, shows our respect, and pays tribute to those who died defending our rights and freedoms.

As we approach Remembrance Day, I encourage you to support the Poppy Campaign, which funds national veteran programs and supports veterans and their families in need. You can pick up a poppy at donation boxes in shops and buildings throughout the city, including buildings on Parliament Hill. You can also donate to the Poppy Campaign online.

A virtual display of falling poppies will also be projected on the Peace Tower in honour of Remembrance Day, with each of the 117,000 falling poppies symbolizing a life lost in service to our country. The display will be projected every evening through to Remembrance Day, ending at midnight on November 11.

Canada’s Humanitarian Response in Haiti

Haitian communities in Canada are rightly concerned about the events unfolding in Haiti. We believe the international community has an important role in responding to the humanitarian and security crisis in Haiti and supporting Haitians in finding a durable solution.

We recently announced that Canada will be conducting an assessment mission in Haiti in collaboration with the United Nations, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and regional partners. The mission will focus on consulting with the people on the ground to support community-led solutions that restore access to essential goods and services and support the people of Haiti.
